Symbol: Philippine ancestry and pride, virility, fertility and motherhood
The lingling-o is popularly known as a symbol of virility and fertility among Northern Philippine tribes, particularly the Igorots. The generic symbol of the ling-ling-o is a round figure with a slit in the middle; the inner part resembles a fetus or the lining of a mother’s uterus. Thus, being the basis of the ling-ling-o as a fertility charm.
The symbol of the ling-ling-o could also be found around the Philippine archipelago as well as in some parts of South-East Asia. The mountain dwelling people of the Cordilleras, in the Philippines, have ling-ling-os made from silver, copper and even gold. These are considered as heirlooms and are extremely valuable. The more valuable the material, the higher the status of the wearer. Some tribes use clay, shell, stone or jade. The materials used vary and depend on the tribe’s location.
It is worn as pendants, earrings and as a pattern on clothing. It is believed to bring good luck to its wearer. Charmed ling-ling-os are believed to have anitos living in them. the amulet is empowered before wearing it.
The origin of the ling-ling-o design is also believed to be based on a piece of stone shaped as such, found in a captured monkeys clenched fist.
The ling-ling-o at present has gained popularity as a symbol of Philippine ancestry and pride. Not to mention virility, fertility and motherhood.
